New Toyota 22R head

This is a new aftermarket cylinder head casting for Toyota 22R head applications, complete with new valves, seats, guides, springs, retainers, keepers and camshaft. This is for 1985 to 1990 Toyota 22R engines (2.4L SOHC), found in Toyota trucks and 4Runners. THIS WILL NOT FIT 1984 AND EARLIER MOTORS. They are ready to install out of the box, except for manifold studs.

There are some junk aftermarket heads out there. This isn't one of them. Thicker deck, and other improvements. You can spend a minimum of $200.00 to over $500.00 to straighten, weld, helicoil, crack repair and machine your old worn out head, and still have an inferior 20+ year old head! You also will have the one to two weeks of down time waiting for the machine shop to fix your head. Why not buy a brand new head that has never been overheated, had threads stripped out, too much milled off requiring a head saver shim etc. These heads are completely new, not rebuilt. They come with a new, (not reground) camshaft. Just bolt on this head with your (good, not badly worn) cam followers. You can even buy the headset and bolts at a very reasonable price and never have to leave your house! NOTE: CAMS NEED TO BE BROKEN IN WITH 1500 TO 2000 RPM FOR 20 TO 30 MINUTES ON START UP! SOME OF THE CURRENT OILS DO NOT HAVE THE OLD FRICTION ADDITIVES, AND BREAKING IN OR RUNNING WITH THE WRONG OILS/ADDITIVES CAN LEAD TO FLAT CAMS. SEE BELOW. Do not use the newer "SN" class oil in these engines as well. Use oil that still has the zinc and other additives for friction (such as Joe Gibbs Oil). #910071C 22R, 22RE Complete Cylinder Head Cam Warranty Information

In recent years the extreme pressure additives zinc and phosphorus have been reduced in motor oils due to emission reductions. In addition, the automakers have been converting over to roller cams since the late 1980’s, thus eliminating the need for zinc & phosphorus in the oil for today’s modern engines.

In 2011 the oil formula changed again with the introduction of the API “SN” rated oils. With this came the basic elimination of zinc & phosphorus in the oil with a much stronger detergent package that destroys any zinc/phosphorus additives that you add to the oil. Running this “SN” oil will flatten the camshaft of your new head, and will void the cam warranty.

Those of us with older vehicles are forced to seek alternative oils to the standard oils available at WalMart, etc. There are several available. You can get Joe Gibbs Hot Rod oil from Johnsons's Quality Machine.

Before assembling cam followers to your new cylinder head, inspect the old followers for scoring or grooves, etc. Replace followers as necessary so as to not flatten your new cam. Liberally coat the cam lobes and followers with the Joe Gibbs assembly lube. Use the Joe Gibbs break-in oil, which you can run for two to three thousand miles if you are just replacing the cylinder head. If you completely rebuild your motor, change at five hundred miles. When you start the engine for the first time, bring the rpm up to 1500-2000 for 20-30 minutes to break in the cam. This will increase oil to the head and cam.

If you follow these simple steps, you give your new cam the best chance at a successful break-in. Follow up with one of the high zinc/phosphorus oils and enjoy many years of trouble-free service from your new cylinder head!
