Cylinder Head Porting Prices

Cylinder head porting refers to the process of modifying the intake and exhaust ports of an internal combustion engine to improve the quality and quantity of the gas flow. Cylinder heads, as manufactured, are usually suboptimal due to design and manufacturing constraints. Porting the heads provides the finely detailed attention required to bring the engine to the highest level of efficiency. Cylinder head porting is performed to increase and equalize air flow through the ports and around the valves. While some of the newer heads are very decent as cast, they still are production pieces, and subject to design and manufacturing constraints. The stages available range from mild bowl work and blending for mild street enhancement, to full on competition work with maximum work on ports and chambers, polishing in the exhaust side, recommended for racing only. Head porting should be matched with an appropriate intake and exhaust combination, and a suitable cam. If you can't get the air in, or you can't get the air out, it won't matter what happens in between, and you can, in fact, hurt performance with a mismatch. Prices are based on bare, clean castings. While seats are finished, a complete valve job is not included, unless that package is added. Typical prices are for aluminum heads - iron heads would be slightly more.

Stage 1 - Valve bowl work, casting flash removal, mild blend, performance valve seats ground.

Stage 2 - Intake ports gasket matched, valve bowl work, valve guide bosses blended, chambers smoothed, performance valve seats ground.

Stage 3 - Ports enlarged, valves unshrouded, fully ported, chambers and exhaust ports polished, performance valve seats ground.

Stage 4 - All above, maximum port enlargement, chamber work, full polish. Recommended for racing only.
